ACE Academy Review

Being underestimated because of what you bring with you is frustrating enough. Being judged before anyone even sees what you’re capable of is worse. ACE Academy builds its story around that feeling, asking whether determination can overcome first impressions when everyone has already decided you do not belong.

Tristan Spade transfers from the United States to ACE Academy, Japan’s premier institution for the study of Cenorobotics, where students compete using advanced mechanized robots known as GEARs. Unfortunately for him, his own machine is hopelessly outdated by local standards, making him more of a curiosity than a serious competitor in the eyes of his classmates. Most teams refuse to take him on, convinced that his obsolete equipment would only drag them down. It is only when an understaffed group finds itself short of pilots that Tristan is finally given an opportunity to prove himself, setting the stage for a story that is as much about earning trust as it is about winning tournaments.

That premise immediately gives the game an underdog appeal. Tristan is never the naturally gifted newcomer who effortlessly outclasses everyone else. His confidence has to be earned, both through his own growth and through the gradual willingness of others to see beyond his outdated GEAR. Watching his teammates slowly replace skepticism with genuine respect became far more satisfying than any individual tournament match because the emotional victories consistently carried more weight than the mechanical ones.

The supporting cast is where ACE Academy finds most of its charm. Mayu, Kaori, and Shou each bring different personalities and perspectives to the struggling team, while Yuuna and Valerie expand the story beyond the immediate competition. Shou especially surprised me. Although the developers have openly acknowledged him as an affectionate homage to Persona 4’s Yosuke Hanamura, he never feels trapped inside that inspiration. His route explores his own insecurities and ambitions, giving him enough individuality that I quickly stopped thinking about the comparison altogether. Making him a fully developed romance option instead of relegating him to comic relief was one of the game’s strongest decisions.

I also appreciated how the romance routes avoid freezing everyone else’s lives the moment I committed to one character. Too many visual novels quietly push the remaining cast into the background once a route begins, but ACE Academy continues allowing friendships and relationships to evolve outside the protagonist’s chosen romance. That decision makes the world feel more believable because every character appears to have a life that exists independently of Tristan. Kaori’s route stood out in particular because it relies on understated emotional moments instead of grand romantic gestures. A simple embrace ends up carrying far more significance than I initially expected.

Outside the character routes, the story introduces a broader mystery surrounding Tristan’s late father’s research and its connection to developments within the world of Cenorobotics. While that larger narrative provides welcome momentum between tournaments, I found it noticeably less compelling than the everyday interactions between teammates. The mystery contains interesting ideas, but the emotional center of the game always remained with the friendships, rivalries, and romances developing inside the academy itself.

Gameplay follows the familiar structure of a choice-driven visual novel, with route selection determining both romance and major story developments. One aspect that consistently frustrated me, however, was the inability to save while a choice prompt remained on screen. Since experimenting with different decisions often requires revisiting earlier branches, I found myself developing the habit of saving before almost every important conversation simply to avoid replaying unnecessary sections. It is a small design limitation, but one that becomes increasingly noticeable across multiple playthroughs.

Visually, ACE Academy remains appealing throughout. The colorful character artwork gives every member of the cast a distinct identity, while the futuristic GEAR designs provide enough variety to keep tournament scenes visually engaging. Rather than overwhelming the player with technical jargon, the game presents its science-fiction setting in an accessible way, allowing the academy itself to remain the primary focus instead of the underlying technology.

One area where the presentation consistently exceeded my expectations was the English voice acting. Considering this was PixelFade Studio’s first commercial release, the performances bring a surprising amount of warmth and personality to the cast. Emotional scenes benefit especially from the voice work, making quieter conversations feel as memorable as the larger dramatic moments.

ACE Academy also wears the marks of an ambitious debut. PixelFade Studio has openly discussed that financial limitations forced the project to conclude earlier than originally envisioned, and I could feel that compromise during the final chapters. The ending resolves the central conflict, but it also leaves the impression that the larger science-fiction storyline had been building toward something more expansive than the finished game ultimately delivers. Even so, the journey rarely suffers because the relationships remain compelling from beginning to end.

What stayed with me most was not Tristan’s outdated machine, but the gradual transformation of a team brought together purely out of necessity into one built on genuine confidence in each other. By the final stretch, the GEAR that once embarrassed its pilot had become a symbol of perseverance rather than inadequacy, and that emotional progression carried the tournament storyline far more effectively than any individual battle.

Verdict

ACE Academy succeeds because it understands that its greatest strength lies with its characters rather than its science-fiction mystery. Tristan’s growth, the believable chemistry among his teammates, thoughtful romance routes, and excellent English voice acting create an experience that remains engaging even when the larger narrative occasionally falls short of its ambitions. Its debut-production limitations are visible, particularly in the rushed conclusion and a few quality-of-life frustrations, but the sincerity of its writing and the warmth of its cast make it an easy recommendation for players looking for a character-driven visual novel.

A debut visual novel whose social core outshines its unfinished sci-fi ambitions. Tristan’s mismatched team slowly becoming something worth fighting for gives this uneven first outing real heart.
