Utawarerumono: Mask of Truth has a single main-story ending. The visual novel scenes advance in order, and map/location selections may change which scene you see first but do not create branching endings. Progress comes from completing tactical battles. The main campaign has 25 numbered fights followed by the concluding encounter, A New Legend Sung. After the story, the much harder Dream Arena provides additional battles and story material.
Before starting: Save regularly between story chapters. During combat, use the rewind function to undo mistakes or retry critical-hit timing. On harder maps, protect any named character whose defeat is specifically listed as a loss condition. Replaying earlier battles for experience, BP, and equipment is useful before difficult bosses.
Main Story Walkthrough
Stage 1 – Yearning
Eliminate the opposing units while keeping Kuon alive. This introduction is a chance to reacquaint yourself with attack chains and turn order.
Stage 2 – Bandit’s Pride
Defeat all opponents. Keep your allies in support range instead of moving isolated units into the middle of the enemy group.
Stage 3 – Distant Heart
Clear the enemy team. Advance together and use ranged attacks to soften targets before moving your frontline into danger.
Stage 4 – False Reunion
Defeat Bokoinante without letting Kiwru fall. Bokoinante retreats and brings in more soldiers, so keep Kiwru out of attack range while your mobile fighters pursue the objective.
Stage 5 – Path of Carnage
Take down the enemy elites while keeping Oshtor alive. For the extra reward, clear ordinary enemies before defeating the elites. Nosuri can target foes on high platforms; characters equipped with Soaring Heart can reach higher ground.
Stage 6 – The Parting
Defeat the gaunji. Its defenses and attacks are strong, making attack- and defense-reducing action chains more useful than spreading damage among targets.
Stage 7 – Homeland Lost
Defeat Jammachiry while protecting Jachdwalt. Check the designated loss condition before committing him to a risky attack.
Stage 8 – Warrior Princess
Eliminate the gaunji without losing either Kuon or Anju. Focus on one dangerous target at a time. When Munechika joins, use her durability to occupy a threat while the others attack.
Stage 9 – Her Resolve
Defeat Shis and protect both Oshtor and Rulutieh. Shis can recover HP, so use Curse from Nekone or Uruuru and Saraana to suppress healing, or have Ougi inflict Daze. Once controlled, concentrate attacks to finish her before recovery resumes.
Stage 10 – The Bond
Defeat Vurai while keeping Oshtor alive. Put group-buffing codices on Oshtor and position other units nearby to benefit during the boss fight.
Stage 11 – Forest of Artifice
Defeat every enemy and keep Nosuri alive. Tokifusa’s long-range attacks punish careless positioning; do not leave Nosuri exposed merely to gain a little extra damage.
Stage 12 – Last Stand
Defeat Tokifusa. Close in carefully, minimize exposure to his ranged offense, and commit your main attackers together.
Stage 13 – Besieged
Clear the enemy group while protecting Oshtor. A powerful foe appears after your advance across the map; keep the party close enough to immediately debuff his speed and offense. Daze, Stupefy and Curse can reduce the danger from his frequent actions.
Stage 14 – Burning Grudge
Remove all enemies and keep Oshtor alive. High-ground differences make Nosuri especially effective; let her cover targets that are awkward for your melee characters to reach.
Stage 15 – Revenge Undying
Win by defeating Maroro or wiping out every enemy. Four mages periodically reduce the party’s maximum HP, so prioritize reaching and eliminating them. Defeat all the other enemies before Maroro if you want the optional Surging Heart reward.
Stage 16 – A Foe Returned
Keep Mikazuchi away from Nosuri; if Mikazuchi reaches and strikes her, or Oshtor falls, you lose. Slow and Daze help interrupt his approach, while Oshtor’s Taunt can redirect him. The optional Desperation reward calls for driving Mikazuchi back to the far side rather than simply defeating him.
Stage 17 – The Twin Shields
Defeat Mikazuchi without losing Oshtor. As in other transformation battles, use area-support codices to strengthen allies fighting near Oshtor.
Stage 18 – Clash at the Capital
Defeat Mikazuchi and protect Oshtor. Maintain defensive buffs and avoid exposing weakened units during the extended confrontation.
Stage 19 – Forbidden Power
Defeat Raiko. Leave Shichirya alive for the optional Serenity II reward: killing Shichirya first causes Raiko to change into a more dangerous form. Immobilize or zone-control Shichirya outside healing range, or Curse Raiko so healing cannot restore him. Save strong co-op attacks for concentrated damage against Raiko.
Stage 20 – Mankind’s Heir
Defeat the initial enemies, then prepare for the stronger second wave of yatanawarabe. Focus on support enemies: Ravieh has powerful healing and status abilities, while Shichirya can restore his allies. Keep your party together and draw enemies in rather than splitting your damage.
Stage 21 – Break Through
Defeat all enemies. Many foes revive after their first defeat, so stay ready to attack them again; do not assume a downed target has been permanently removed.
Stage 22 – Pain and Truth
Clear the yatanawarabe group. Use protection against disabling status effects, eliminate the remaining healer early, and focus your damage instead of fighting all elites simultaneously.
Stage 23 – Abyssal Whispers
Force Shyasurika, Liveruni, and Ravieh into their transformed states. Defeating their first forms is sufficient for the objective: do not waste turns trying to wear down each transformed opponent’s high defense. For the bonus reward, remove the lesser enemies before causing these transformations.
Stage 24 – A Wish Undone
Defeat the transformed enemies. Oshtor can fight in his akuruturuka form, while Munechika gains a strong self-buff that increases her survivability. Use these advantages to anchor the team.
Final Stage – The Great Sealing
Defeat Woshis and keep both Oshtor and Kuon alive. The two allied groups fight in separate areas. Equip Oshtor for attack and speed so he can defeat Woshis rapidly, while Kuon’s side plays defensively. After the next phase begins, Woshis becomes aggressive and additional immortal summoners appear near the other party; protect Kuon and eliminate newly spawned lesser enemies while Oshtor completes the main objective.
A New Legend Sung – Concluding Battle
Rescue Kuon. At first, the enemies’ Contract’s Seal prevents their defeat, so concentrate on surviving. When a new level-one ally joins, use him actively to gain levels and unlock the ability to bypass the seal. In the later phase, gather the party near that ally for his support bonuses and attack the final enemy. Watch its current element: matching elemental attacks can restore its health rather than damage it.
Post-Game – Dream Arena
The Dream Arena contains fifteen numbered battles and five extra battles. These are separate from the linear main campaign and are substantially tougher. Completing them adds further character moments. Revisit Free Battles to collect equipment and build BP before attempting the later challenges.
Dream Arena 1 – The Beast Awakens
Defeat Moznu. Block his escape routes or surround him to stop his repeated retreats.
Dream Arena 2 – One Last Time
Survive the divided-team opening by letting the main party defend behind Munechika and Rulutieh while the smaller group manages nearby boro-gigiri. Regroup against the remaining monsters.
Dream Arena 3 – The 1,000 Year Man
Act quickly. The two berserk gutuardar repeatedly knock each other out and become stronger when they stand back up. Reach them before the cycle makes them unmanageable.
Dream Arena Extra – The Odder Couple
Complete the map’s warmth-finding objective with the preset characters; this is not a standard enemy-elimination battle.
Dream Arena 4 – A Man’s Quest
Escort either the archer or mage to the destination. Their movements depend on nearby threats, so clear the path ahead of them.
Dream Arena 5 – And His Name Is…
Use the displayed victory condition and your party’s movement abilities; save a fresh battle slot before attempting this stage.
Dream Arena 6 – Serendipity
Check the battle’s special objective and reposition carefully rather than committing every attacker at once.
Dream Arena Extra – Faltered Beast
Follow the preset party’s objective and prioritize survival over optional combat.
Dream Arena 7 – Sealed Memory
Prepare upgraded equipment and focus damage when enemies come into support range.
Dream Arena 8 – Party Fouled
Protect the destination squares against advancing enemies. Leave defenders near the objective: more attackers appear after the initial wave.
Dream Arena 9 – Living Legends
Defeat the designated elite targets; use concentrated attacks and keep fragile allies behind your frontline.
Dream Arena Extra – Playing for Keeps
When the book enemies appear, avoid eliminating all of them immediately. Once the required book is defeated, Munechika pursues; preserving obstacles can help you escape.
Dream Arena 10 – Dire Consequence
Stop attackers from reaching the destination. Reinforcements spawn at glowing squares; placing an allied unit on one of those squares can prevent that spawn.
Dream Arena 11 – Back to Nature
Check the stage’s victory target before advancing, and rely on your strongest upgraded units.
Dream Arena 12 – Ultimate Showdown
Keep defensive gear and status resistance equipped, with healing support available for the most exposed attackers.
Dream Arena Extra – Errant Errands
Use the fixed party and special mission instructions rather than standard elimination tactics.
Dream Arena 13 – Re-Vengeance
Recheck equipment slots and status protections before engaging the later Dream Arena bosses.
Dream Arena 14 – Love’s Legacy
This battle has three phases with allies paired against separate enemies. Oshtor must win his engagements to progress. Equip the other characters to survive their individual duels and help him where possible.
Dream Arena 15 – Absolution
Fight the final group of powerful akuruturuka opponents. Equip strong status protections, notably against confusion, and spend BP on accessory slots and survivability before attempting the stage.
Dream Arena Extra – Our Little Secret
Complete the final preset extra challenge after unlocking it.
Completion tip: The Dream Arena is not required for the main ending, but it is worth playing after the credits for additional story context. For difficult fights, rewind turns to correct positioning and critical-hit mistakes instead of restarting an entire battle.
